Life in the Old West was hard for many. Among them was a woman named Arabella Mortenson. She had two teenaged children, and a husband named Frank who took out on her, his frustration with the world. She survived through beatings, broken bones and depredations in the bedroom, and struggled on. Bella's husband loved to gamble, but he wasn't any good at it, and finally they had to flee, heading out west to escape the men he owed money to. Bella hoped for a good life.

Then, in a dusty little cow town in Kansas, her new life actually began. Frank went into a saloon and stayed much too long. She knew he was gambling, and that he would lose everything they had. The world went crazy as she heard him throw their daughter into the pot, as if she were merely a gold watch. A young cowboy warned Frank not to take the bet. Accusations of cheating were made, and sudden gunfire changed everything for Bella, her children and the young cowboy who had tried to warn Frank.

Now they were on the run, as the cowboy feared retribution for what he was sure others would see as murder, while Bella fled what she was convinced people would see as theft. They were hiding from the law and soldiers, as they tried to find some place where Bella and her children could make that new start.

Along the way the cowboy and Frank's widow fell in love.

But what might have been applauded in other circumstances only led to more trouble.
